AMH plays a critical part in the development of a baby’s sex organs while he or she is still in the womb. A baby’s reproductive organs begin to mature during the first weeks of pregnancy. The kid will be born with the genes to be either a male or a female (XY genes) (XX genes).

Why is the AMH test done?

An AMH test is commonly used to determine a woman’s ability to create fertile eggs for pregnancy. During her childbearing years, a woman’s ovaries can produce hundreds of eggs. As a woman gets older, her number decreases. The amount of AMH in a woman’s blood can indicate how many potential egg cells she still has. Ovarian reserve is the term for this.

A woman with a high ovarian reserve may have a better probability of becoming pregnant. She may also be able to put off attempting to conceive for months or even years. If a woman’s ovarian reserve is low, she may have difficulty getting pregnant and should try to have a baby as soon as possible.

AMH tests may also be used to:

Predict the onset of menopause, the era in a woman’s life when her monthly periods have finished and she is no longer able to become pregnant. It usually begins when a woman reaches the age of 50.
Assist in determining the cause of amenorrhea, or the lack of menstruation. It’s more common among girls who haven’t started menstruation by the age of 15 and women who have missed multiple cycles.
Assist in the diagnosis of the polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disease that is a prevalent cause of female infertility.
Infants with genitals that aren’t clearly marked as male or female should be checked. Women with specific forms of ovarian cancer should be monitored.

Why Do you need AMH test?

If you are a woman who is having trouble conceiving, you may need an AMH test. The test can help you figure out how likely you are to have a child. If you’re already seeing a fertility specialist, the test may be used to forecast how well you’ll respond to treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

High levels could indicate that you have more eggs available and will respond to treatment better. You may have fewer eggs available and may not respond well to treatment if your AMH levels are low.
