How to Get Rid of That Pain in Your Neck ?

You roll out of bed and suddenly you feel it—a stifling pain in your neck. You can’t move your head without feeling an unwelcome twinge, and stretching doesn’t help. What have you done?

Chances are, it wasn’t a single movement that caused this pain. Rather, it’s probably an issue that’s been building over time—the culmination of misaligned body positions, repetitive movements and other aspects of your environment that caught up to you on this unfortunate morning.

While some chronic pain may be caused by arthritis, permanent tissue damage or a long-standing injury, others are the results of harmful patterns repeated day after day. For example, sitting for extended periods of time can be tough on your back and neck because it puts your pelvis in an extreme position, especially if you cross your legs or hang forward.

But here’s some good news: Once you become aware of some of these habits and postures, you can start to modify them, which can help reduce your pain. Here are some easy modifications you can make to prevent your next episode of neck pain from ruining your day.

Relax your jaw

We often clench our jaws unknowingly, especially when chewing gum. The muscles that help you chew are connected to your neck. Relax your jaw right now by letting your mouth hang open (picture a person asleep on a plane and try to imitate that level of relaxation in your face). It’s silly, yes, but relaxing!

Open your chest

Many of the torso muscles attach to parts of your shoulder that, in turn, connect to your neck. The joints in the human body are all joined like a chain of paper clips. If you move one, the others are affected. To counteract these tight muscles, lie on the floor, spread your arms out to the sides and breathe deeply for three to five minutes.

Align your hips

Keep your knees facing straight ahead rather than letting them turn in or out excessively. Align them with your ankle joint rather than letting them bow out or sag inward. And try to avoid crossing your legs when sitting, as this pulls your spine out of alignment.

Walk softly

The lighter you step, the easier it is on your spine. Use your muscles to decelerate when you step—don’t just stomp or flop your feet down. See how quiet you can be with each step.

Wear supportive shoes

Just like a car, you need good shock absorbers or your frame will show early wear. Stand with your weight distributed evenly between both legs. Avoid high heels and toss out any shoes that are overly worn.

Choose comfortable clothing

Tight clothes, shoes and accessories (neck ties, belts, hair ties, etc.) can make your muscles feel tense rather than relaxed.

Set up a supportive sleep environment

Is your bed comfortable? What about your pillow? Opting for higher-quality purchases in this area is an investment that pays off. Pillows and beds usually last 10 years, so that $2,000 price tag breaks down to $200/year and just $0.55 a day. Many of us spend more than that on daily coffee.

Use technology at eye level

What’s COVID Neon Variant? Should You Be Worried About It?

The new so-called variant being talked about right now has been dubbed Neon COVID Variant “NeoCoV” and was originally found in a population of bats from South Africa. Till today, as per the report, NeoCoV is only known to spread among these animals.

Medical reports of new viruses or mutations of the coronavirus family have been a constant affair over the last couple of years that has seen the world battle an unprecedented pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus first detected in China that caused Covid-19.

Now, there’s talk about ‘NeoCoV’ or the Neon Variant.

There are various reports talking about Chinese scientists warning of a likely variant of the virus that’s linked to the 2012 and 2015 outbreaks in the Middle East. That older virus belongs to the same family as SARS-CoV-2.

So what is NeoCoV or the Neon Variant of COVID?

This analogy is based on all the current reports and papers (i.e. a research paper on which there have not yet been comments by fellow scientists) on the various online website. The paper says that NeoCoV, a mutation related to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV), could bind with the ACE2 receptor in a slightly different way than the Covid-19 pathogen and emerge as more dangerous than the current variants. ACE2 is a receptor found in human bodies and the primary route through which SAR-CoV-2 causes infections.

Should you worry about the NeoCov?

No, you should not be worried about the reports of this MERS-linked virus going through a zoonotic effect and transmitting from animals to humans.

The last outbreak of MERS was reported in 2015 and the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in 2019 that there has been a reduction in cases of MERS globally.

“Since 2016, 1465 cases of MERS-CoV have been reported and between 300 and 500 deaths may have been averted due to accelerated global efforts,” WHO has said. The last outbreak of the virus was reported in 2015 in the Republic of Korea with 186 cases and 38 deaths and had an estimated economic impact of US$12 billion.

Is NeoCoV a new COVID Variant ?

No, NeoCoV is not a Covid variant.

All that we know so far is that NeoCoV is probably linked to the MERS-CoV virus and has only been found among bats so far. The MERS virus is a respiratory virus that can cause severe disease and has been fatal in approximately 35 per cent of patients to date.

According to the WHO, while the MERS virus has demonstrated limited ability to transmit between people outside of hospitals, it has repeatedly caused large scale outbreaks in health care facilities with severe health, security and economic impacts, most notably in Saudi Arabia in 2014-2016 and the Republic of Korea in 2015. In total, 27 countries have reported cases since 2012, leading to 858 known deaths due to the infection and related complications.

However, as of now, there has been no development to indicate that any MERS-CoV-linked virus has spread among humans. There have been no human infections of NeoCoV globally and there have been no deaths. The WHO, which identifies and notifies mutations and new virus outbreaks, has not said anything about these reports about NeoCoV.

Your immunity is the first line of defense against infections and diseases. The impact of stress and pollution on your body can be reduced with strong immunity system. However, as time goes by, your immunity system too reduces its strength resulting into frequent colds, coughs or flu.

In early 20’s, a person has a strong immunity functionality. He/she feels healthy and energetic to fight against infections or diseases. However, as we grow older, our immunity system starts deteriorating which results into frequent colds and other health issues. The late twenties are the most dangerous for one’s health as there is a significant drop in our immunity system resulting in frequent attacks from bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Fatigue

In your twenties you have abundant energy levels throughout the day along with stamina to burn more calories every day at both rest and physical activities resulting into a well-toned body. On the other hand, if you are in your late 20s, you would experience fatigue in the short bursts of activity. You may feel tired at sometimes and energetic at other times or vice versa.

The major reason behind this is reduced antibodies against oxidative stress which results in reduced energy levels. This may be a difficult time for many people who have to manage their work schedule along with social commitments. The need for good sleep arises during these periods to compensate for the lack of energy resulting from weakened immunity system.

Changes in skin tone

As we age, our body starts producing less collagen due to which there is a reduction in skin thickness and volume giving way to sagging skin which becomes loose due to production of less collagen resulting into wrinkles, fine lines and reduced skin elasticity. Thus it is important that you follow a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, fiber, proteins and other minerals.

The good news is that your body starts producing more melanin in your 30’s which results in an even-toned skin tone with reduced appearance of blemishes. However, if you expose yourself to direct sunlight or UV rays or indulge in smoking or drugs during this time then be prepared for darkening of your skin pigment resulting into spots on the exposed areas like face, hands etc. Exposure to sun should also be limited during these times as it could result in hyperpigmentation (discoloration of the skin) or may cause early aging signs like dryness, wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

Hair changes

In your 20’s, there is a lot of oil production from sebaceous glands resulting in thick hair with no graying or falling off issue. The color starts fading as you age and your body produces fewer melanocytes causing less pigment deposition on the hair shaft giving way to premature graying of hair i.e., going white at an early age. This is natural but if you feel that you have become grey much earlier then consult a doctor for diagnosis which might reveal some other health issue.

With age, the hair starts getting thinner and weaker causing them to break off or fall due to telogen effluvium. It is a natural process that occurs as a result of aging but stress might also be a factor behind it. This can be prevented by eating healthy diet containing antioxidants like vitamin C, E along with minerals like selenium, magnesium etc. You should also include proteins in your daily food intake as they help improve the quality of the hair and make them stronger from within.

Osteoporosis

This is a degenerative bone disorder resulting from lack of calcium and vitamin D which affects one out of three women below 30 years of age. You should always include dairy products & green leafy vegetables in your daily food intake which helps build strong bones preventing osteoporosis. This problem usually happens to early 20’s population.

Hypertension

How COVID has changed public health ?

During the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that started in late 2020, public health systems around the world were forced to re-prioritize and struggle with insufficient resources. Public health professionals began their career during eras where infectious diseases were part of everyday life and had a clear priority: prevention and control of infections and vector borne diseases.

How COVID impacted public health in a global level ?

Public health was necessary for third world countries because of the lack of basic healthcare and medications needed for treatment. Public health prioritized infectious diseases, while noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic respiratory illness etc. were considered less important. Public health workers had to split their resources between preventing or catching serious communicable diseases vs promoting healthy lifestyles to decrease the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases. Public health professionals in the past had to focus on communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria since they were responsible for a large number of deaths worldwide. Public health workers always faced the challenge of insufficient resources, but never experienced a virus that could cause nearly 1 million deaths per year globally at one point. Public health systems around the world struggled with their limited budgets and manpower to provide sufficient data surveillance and take necessary actions to prevent COVID-19 from spreading within counties or regions. Public Health departments were overburdened by COVID-19 pandemic that now seems like it’s been going on forever, thus eroding their capabilities to take care of other public health issues such as tobacco control, alcohol control, mental health, diabetes prevention etc. Public health systems will be forced to rethink their role in society and prioritize certain issues that are deemed as priorities now.

Public health funding will now have to be restructured so public health systems could tackle more efficiently the challenges of the future such as climate change or antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Public Health workers are beginning to question themselves why they chose this career path since they had high expectations of being part of positive changes within society but ended up fighting an invisible enemy eternally with limited resources. Public health workers understand that is not the COVID-19 pandemic fault per se , but rather due to lack of political commitment for finding a solution on time before the virus mutated into the strain that was initially obtained from Saudi Arabia in early 2021. Public health systems are still struggling with the lack of proper strategies to deal with COVID-19 pandemic, which is likely to continue for at least another decade before scientists are able to find a vaccine or at least have efficient treatment against this virus.

Also, Public Health departments are now suffering from severe staff shortages due to high turnover rate as public health workers leave their jobs making it difficult for Public Health Systems to properly prioritize certain issues. Public health professionals understand that the low-income communities already suffering from high rates of infectious diseases will also be experiencing higher mortality rates during the next years because the economic impact of COVID-19 is not limited only by persons affected directly by the disease but also by those indirectly affected through loss of productivity caused by illness of their relatives. Public health departments question their role in society, while believing that they are doing everything to protect citizens from future pandemics. Public Health Systems are currently overstretched by the lack of financial support and staff, which is leaving them with little capacity to deliver effective services or have an impact on public health issues outside the Public Health department. Public Health professionals understand that Public Health Systems could be doing more work but due to limited resources they are forced to prioritize one type of issue over another creating backlogs within Public Health Departments that may affect both citizen’s safety and productivity of Public Health Systems.(see appendix for more detailed information about COVID-19.

Public health is an immensely diverse field, which is why public health workers need to continuously work on their knowledge in order for them to stay at the cutting edge of what is happening in society. Public Health systems are often under pressure by various stakeholders to deliver more effective Public Health programs but without enough Public Health professionals working there might not be enough sustainable impact made within Public Health Systems that will benefit Public Health departments. Public health worker’s expectations of their jobs were too high according to surveys done every year, only 20% of Public health workers are still working in Public Health 5 years after graduation most likely due to lack of stability and financial rewards (see appendix for more information about public health workforce).

Public health is an important part of society that can potentially impact many aspects in which Public Health workers are having a positive effect on Public Health Systems. Public Health Systems are directly benefiting Public Health departments in terms of policies and funding opportunities (see appendix). This means that public health cannot only be seen as limited to Public Health Departments but also by other stakeholders within society (see appendix for more information about COVID-19 pandemic ).

How public health is impacted in Nepal ?

The public health system has come under immense pressure since the emergence of COVID-19 . The demand for services has resulted in increased waiting times at Public Health facilities in Nepal especially among low-income populations who rely on Public Health resources. Public health systems are coping with increasing demands by prioritizing Public Health emergencies over Public Health public health measures. The financing of Public Health Systems has been a challenge since the pandemic started, most Public health agencies have made massive budget cuts in the last few years resulting in less capacity to respond to Public Health emergencies and increased pressures on Public Health Systems who already had difficulties funding their services before the COVID-19 pandemic . Public Health systems are currently working with increased staff shortages due to high turnover rates as Public health workers leave their jobs making it difficult for Public health systems to properly prioritize certain issues (see appendix for more detailed information about COVID-19 ). This pressing issue is increasing with rise in COVID Cases day by day.

There has been a major influx of Public health professionals becoming unemployed or underemployed due to lack of available jobs. Young graduates are looking for employment outside the public health industries because there is limited job security with Public Health Systems since they run on limited budgets most likely resulting in hiring freezes and Public Health workers not getting full time hours. This affects Public health training programs as fewer people want to enroll into these programs knowing that their chances of Public health employment is increasing limited. Public health departments are also struggling to provide Public Health training because of budget cuts and restructuring due to limited resources within Public Health systems (see appendix for more information about public health workforce).

Public health Information Infographic(to use as knowledge, not to be copied verbatim): Public health workers have been disappearing from the Public Health industry due to Public Health Systems and Public Health Departments not prioritizing Public Heath issues enough (see appendix for more detailed information about COVID-19 pandemic ). The lack of infrastructure in Public Healthy systems has definitely contributed to the lack of stability in jobs that Public health professionals receive resulting in less people entering into Public Health industries (see appendix for more detailed information about COVID-19 ).

The Public Health Systems are not seen publicly as Public health organizations that Public Health workers can rely on to solve Public Health issues. Public Health Systems are not seen as Public health partners by Public health professionals which is Public health contributing to the lack of Public health activities, investments, and training programs in Public heath Systems at the moment. Thus, it is very essential for us to collaborate and work for the benefit of the society and enhance the level of public health, our society and every citizen as a whole.

Best Practices for Home Isolation During COVID Infection

The best practice of home isolation during COVID infection is to keep yourself isolated from the public. This means staying indoors, being careful about people you’re engaging with, and wearing clean clothes every day to avoid bringing infected material into your home. It’s important that you also take self care measures which mean having plenty of rest, drinking lots of fluids, eating healthy foods, getting some exercise or physical activity, and not smoking cigarettes.

How long should I stay at home if I have confirmed COVID infection?

Once you are diagnosed with a COVID infection by a medical professional (usually this means that you’ve shown symptoms) then it’s advised that you immediately start self quarantining yourself at home for 14 days or until your doctor says it’s safe. This rule applies even in cases where someone in your home has contracted COVID, in which case it’s best for everyone who lives there to be quarantined together so that nobody else can get sick.

This may seem counter intuitive when it comes to self care, but the idea of wearing clean clothes every day helps you avoid giving the COVID infection to others. If you don’t have any fresh clothing then it’s recommended that you shower at least once a day and wash your current set of clothes thoroughly with soap before putting them back on again after showering. It would also help if everyone living at home or staying there regularly could do this too, because this will help prevent the spread of disease within the home itself.

How long does it take for symptoms to show after COVID infection?

The time that symptoms of COVID infection will start showing varies, but it starts happening within three days of getting the disease. This is why self quarantine is the best practice at home. If you are experiencing symptoms then it’s important not to engage with others as much as possible, even if they are feeling completely fine themselves because the virus can be transmitted by fluids and secretions during this period before you actually look sick.

This means that if someone in your home has contracted COVID then everyone needs to do their part to help keep each other healthy without spreading germs everywhere. Drinking plenty of fluids every day helps break up any potential blockages in your respiratory system caused by the COVID virus, and it could also help reduce your fever if you’re feeling hot. Proper self care while at home includes getting enough rest so your body can focus on fighting off the infection, eating healthy foods to give yourself the energy you need while recovering, being active or doing some exercise or physical activity every day, and not smoking cigarettes because this could lead to complications with healing.

Can I go outside when I have COVID?

You should stay indoors until you are fully healed from a COVID infection.
